I have a xl-15 that apparently had a pull starter mounted. I have purchased a back plate and when I went to install it, the crankpin has an extension used with the pull start which will not let the backplate seat against the case. I've tried to remove the connecting rod from the crank pin without success. Any help here? I intend to carefully grind the crank pin down to allow installing the back plate.

Hi,
That engine originally came with the Hobby Shack Flying Start airplane, which was available about 10 years ago. You will need to remove the crankshaft from the engine. I would not attempt to grind down the pin with the crankshaft in the engine as metal filings will more than likely get into the rear bearing and damage it when run.
To remove the crankshaft, you need to first remove the cylinder head and head gaskets, then you need to remove the sleeve by pulling it straight up and out. You can then rotate the crank so that the crankpin is up and you can pry off the connecting rod. You can then push the crankshaft out through the back.
Please not that the piston/connecting rod and sleeve must be reassembled in the same orientation as it was originally or the engine won't run right. It helps to place a mark on the back of the connecting rod prior to removing it to distinguish back from front.
